Crawling Up

Up it grew, bit by bit and swirl by swirl
Creeping along the stucco like a snake
Bound to the stone as water to a whirl
"I can grow forever, can never break"

The tide of time flowed by and still it clung
Until one day the building was to fall
It heard the sparrow whisper as it sung
"What am I to do? Where I am to crawl?"

Despairing thoughts thus began their haunting
It thought and thought, "how can I escape doom?"
It was too high to jump and the thought was daunting
"The humans care not I'm here, let's assume"

The ivy decided to die with pride
And say it wasn't afraid, but - it lied
